When I was younger I played every sport I could. I loved athletics. I loved the competition and effort made along side my teammates. I confess I didn’t love losing, but losing was made easier when I stood with my teammates. I didn’t know it at the time but I was learning a valuable life lesson. The lesson I learned is this, the greatest achievements and lessons in life don’t happen alone. While there are superstars in every field whether business or sports, entertainment or science, they can’t do it alone. Orison Swett Marden said it this way, “No employer today is independent of those about him. He cannot succeed alone, no matter how great his ability or capital. Business today is more than ever a question of cooperation.”

As a business we have determined that teamwork should be our first core value. It is the recognition that no individual or business can achieve their greatest potential without others. The way we define Teamwork is, “The cooperative effort of a team of people working together towards a common goal.” Teamwork is not 10, 20 or 100 people all doing what they want. Its everyone choosing to work toward a common, hopefully bigger, goal than any one person could alone.

Cooperation, effort, people and a goal. No matter what organization you belong to if you aren’t able or willing to cooperate with the rest of the team, own it and move on. You and the organization will be better off. If the goals that have been set are not goals you can support don’t delude yourself into believing they will change for you. Effort is given to what we believe in and what we believe has value. If your effort is just enough to get by, do yourself and the organization a favor and find something you can put all of your effort into. Apply your efforts to something you believe in, something that stretches you and do it with people who will be there with you, win or lose.
