Purpose and Values

Hi, my name is Mike Derryberry, and I'm co-founder and co-owner of Compass Cleaning Solutions.

What makes one company a pleasure to deal with and another a complete nightmare? It comes down to clarity and alignment within the organization. Without it, dysfunction rules.

So let me ask you a question. Have you ever worked for a dysfunctional company?

Yes, I know it's a crazy question, but here's the thing, pretty much all of us at one time or another have worked for some company or been involved in some organization where we felt like there was complete dysfunction. Have you ever asked yourself why that is? Have you ever understood what caused that?

One of the things that I talk about a lot is the idea of understanding your purpose. That is why you do what you do. What are your values? How you go about doing what it is that you do and how important that is, just for a functioning organization.

So why is it important? I think it boils down to two things. It boils down to alignment, and it boils down to clarity.

So why alignment? When you have misalignment, that is when you have employees, or you have team members that have a different perspective, perhaps a different focus or a different mentality about your business, or about your team, or your organization, they go about doing things that maybe are inconsistent with the rest of the team. You're going to have dysfunction. You're going to have problems. One of the things you'll see in organizations where there is dysfunction is a whole lot of turnover. Now, why is that?

At the very top of the organization, you have a leader expressing the things that they believe; however, they are not communicating their beliefs to the rest of the organization. He may be the founder. He may be the one who created this business. It's his or her business, but they're not communicating that information to the rest of the organization.

When you hire people, and you bring them in, the bottom line is those people come with their own set of values. They come with their reasons for joining this organization. If the leadership isn't clear, when there isn't clarity about why we do what we do and how we do it, I promise you, those people will be bringing in their own sets of values and their reasons, and that's going to cause all kinds of disruption. It's going to create all kinds of chaos, and ultimately you're going to have misaligned goals. Things are not going to be on time, and you're not going to know how to make those deadlines, things are not going to be happening because people are always working in different directions.

You might even have within the organization competing factions within the business. You might have people who are wanting to go one direction, and somebody else wants to go another. It will create a lot of friction within the organization.

On the other hand, when you have an organization where, from the top-down, there's clarity about why we do what we do, there's clarity about how we go about doing those things. We've defined our purpose and our values.

We complete our tasks with those goals in mind. What you're going to find is an organization that has the energy, and there's positivity, and people want to be part of that. The beauty of being clear about your values and what your purpose is that it will do one of two things. It will either push away or repel those people who don't have the same set of values, or more importantly, it will attract those who do.

Let's be honest; if we have people within the organization who all are true believers, that is they believe in what we're doing and why we're doing it, they believe in the value systems, they'll be willing to work within that, and you're going to get a whole lot more done.

Let me ask you a question. Is this something that rings true to you? Is this a situation that you've had, or maybe you have some opinions? If so, I'd appreciate some comments down below, and I would love to communicate with you and have some dialogue about it.

Thank you very much.
